Copyright, Design & Patents Act
The Copyright, Designs & Patent Act has two main purposes:
1) To ensure people are rewarded for their work.
2) To give protection to the copyright holder if someone tries to copy or steal their work.
It was created to protect investment of time, money and effort by the people who create original pieces of work, these include: books, music, film, games & apps.
On computer it specifically prevents people from: copying software, copying music, copying images from the web or webpages and pretending its your own work.
There are a few common myths associated with this Act that people mistakenly believe:

- "I didn't know so I'm not guilty" - if you copy any work you are guilty.
- "If it doesn't have a copyright notice, it is not copyrighted" - all work produced by anyone is automatically copyrighted.
- "If I don't charge for it, I can copy it" - you can't copy any work whether you charge or not.
If you do break copyright laws you can be subject to a large fine or jail time if charges are pressed.
